Sandwich Sailors - Special Olympics
We are pleased to announce the new Sandwich Community Special Olympics program: the "SANDWICH SAILORS." This program is driven by Special Olympics Mass., Cape & Islands Region, with the Sandwich Recreation Department, the Sandwich Student Council, and the National Honor Society. Through the efforts of the Sandwich Recreation Department, we have had a young athletes program that is designed for children with intellectual disabilities from 2-8 years old. Our new program will be for individuals from 8 years old through adulthood.
OUR GOAL is to provide individuals with intellectual disabilities an opportunity to participate in seasonal sports, with a chance to take part in Special Olympics Cape & Islands and state tournaments. We want our “athletes” to compete individually and when needed with student volunteers.
OUR SPORT OFFERINGS INCLUDE: soccer, bowling, track & field, and basketball. In order to provide a quality program.
Special Olympics athletes are NEVER CHARGED FEES to participate in activities. However, it costs Special Olympics Massachusetts $390 per participant for their uniforms, transportation, and facility fees.
Sandwich Sailors participate in four age groups: A sport for every season:
Age 2-7 : Young Athletes Soccer : September - November
Age 8-15 : Juniors Bowling : October - March
Age 13-21 : Seniors Track & Field : March - June
Age 22 + : Masters Socialization : July - August
Basketball : December - March
